Our Honorees
were Long
Island Natives Steven
and Debby Gage, our former President and Treasurer. Steven and
Debby have worked very hard for the Shul. Steven served two
terms as President and was on the Board in other capacities for some years. Debby
served several terms as Treasurer. Steven has put many hours into steering
our Variance application through the legal hearings and the Town of Hempstead
Zoning Board. This has culminated in the successful granting of a Variance
so that we can now enlarge the shul. He is still working on the project,
and will undoubtedly drive it through to completion. Debby has been active
in many aspects of the shul. As well as being a hard-working Treasurer she
has served on the Sisterhood Board and has previously been honored as the Young
Israel Honoree for the National Council of Young Israel Aishes Chayil Award.
Steven is Chief Operating Officer of Teliris, Ltd. a company delivering a
revolutionary change in the approach and the underlying technology for meeting
over distances. Debby is Manager at the accounting firm Margolin, Winer
& Evens. Steven and Debby have two children, Justin and Dana.
At the Dinner, we presented the owners of Merrick Bagel Boss with a Community Service Award. Bagel Boss has sponsored and donated food to our Shalosh Seudos on Shabbos afternoons for over ten years. Bagel Boss has also recently sponsored and provided food for Rabbi Volk's Bagels and Torah event, held approximately every two weeks with the children on Sunday mornings. Having Bagel Boss in the community, with appetizing and tasty food under Orthodox kosher supervision, provides an important social meeting place.
In addition, the Journal Dinner Committee presented the Avoda Award to Renée Maynard. Renée has been Secretary of the Board of the Shul for four terms. She has also produced the Shul's newsletter for about ten years, ever since the days when a monthly printed newsletter was sent by mail. With the advent of e-mail this has become a weekly task, without which we would not know what is happening in the community, and the times of davening. Renée has previously been honored as the Young Israel Honoree for the National Council of Israel Aishes Chayil award.
