YOUNG ISRAEL OF MERRICK

NEWSLETTER

November 23, 2000 - 25th Cheshvan 5761

It’s always good to start the newsletter with a simcha – it puts people in a good mood, gives you hope, makes you smile and it also keeps you from realizing just how dull the newsletter really is.

SIMAN TOV U’MAZEL TOV

A big ecstatic mazel tov is being given to Lois and Aaron David upon the engagement of their daughter, Rebeka to Gabriel Boxer, son of Nina and Tim Boxer of Queens, New York. In honor of this absolutely splendid occasion, the David family is inviting the entire shul to celebrate an open house L’Chaim at their home on Sunday, November 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This is for the adults only so throw some cold pizza, burnt spaghetti, or raw meat at your respective little darlings and come on down and share in the joy and simcha of the David family. The L’Chaim will be dairy dessert. We would like to wish our dear friends, Lois and Aaron, all the grandparents, siblings, and other relatives much health, happiness, nachas and joy as you celebrate Rebeka and Gabriel’s engagement. Mazel Tov.

HEY, TURKEY!

So here you are with the left over turkey that no one wanted to eat in the first place but do every year because it’s… well, it’s Thanksgiving. (Hey, last year we really broke with tradition and went to Rattner’s – when it was still kosher) So here are a couple of ideas that kill two birds with one stone (pardon the pun) : what to do with all that leftover turkey and what to serve for Shabbat

Couscous Salad with Turkey, Almonds, and Apricots

1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 Red bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 cup cooked turkey, coarsely chopped
1 cup dried apricots, slivered
1 cup slivered almonds, lightly toasted*
1 bunch scallions (green onions), thinly sliced
2 cups chicken or turkey broth
2 cups plain couscous
Salt and pepper to taste

* To toast almonds, place in shallow baking pan and bake uncovered in 350°F oven about 15 minutes, stirring often, until lightly browned.

  1. Heat oil in medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add pepper and saute until soft, about 5 minutes. Add turkey, apricots, almonds and scallions and stir until warm. Keep mixture over low heat while preparing couscous.
  2. In a medium saucepan, bring broth to boil. Slowly stir in couscous. Remove pan from heat, cover and let stand 5 minutes.
  3. Uncover couscous and stir in turkey mixture until evenly distributed. Season with salt and pepper and serve. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Leftover Turkey or Chicken Croquettes

Ingredients
3 cups cooked, finely chopped turkey or chicken meat
1 1/2 cups seasoned dry bread crumbs
2 to 3 lightly beaten eggs
2 cups sauteed chopped onion
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Directions
1 In a large bowl combine the chicken, bread crumbs, 2 eggs and onion and mix well; if mixture is too dry to form patties, mix in another lightly beaten egg. Then add parsley, salt and pepper to taste, mix well and form into small patties.
2 Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat and fry patties in oil until golden brown.

THIS WEEK IN JEWISH HISTORY- by Jeffrey Maynard

21 Marcheshvan 5713 - Yahrzeit of Chaim Weizmann. We remember Chaim Weizmann, scientist, Anglo-Zionist leader, First President of Israel. See http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/biography/weizmann.html

2 Kislev 5695 - Yahrzeit of Baron Edmond de Rothschild. We remember the "Father of the Yishuv" - financier of settlement in Eretz Yisroel. See http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/biography/rothschild.html

25 November 1940 - The 60th anniversary of the blowing up of the "Patria", loaded with immigrants to Palestine, in Haifa. 198 immigrants died.

28 November 1744 - Frederick the Great took Prague in the Wars of Succession and the populace ransacked the ghetto. He soon left and the Croats returned. They accused the Jews of treason and again their quarters were sacked. A few weeks later (December 18 and January 7) Empress Maria Theresa banished all the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia. Due to the protests of the Jews and the governments of England and Holland, the decree was dropped everywhere but in Prague.

29 November 1947 - United Nations decides on partition of Palestine. United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 called for the partition of the British-ruled Palestine Mandate into a Jewish state and an Arab state. It was approved on November 29, 1947 with 33 votes in favor, 13 against, 10 abstentions and one absentee. See http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1947UN181.html for the full text of the resolution and the voting.
