BIKUR CHOLIM
GOLDEN QUOTE: "Only that day dawns to which we are awake" - .Henry Thoreau

Pick a Mitzvah project - the Merrick Bellmore Bikur Cholim has plenty to select from:
* Hospital visits to Jewish patients at Mercy Hospital prior to the high holidays. Call Belle Hecht (868-8659) to participate.
* Entertainment program for residents of the Meadowbrook Care Center in Freeport on Sunday, September 24. If you can play a musical instrument, sing, dance, or simply bring cheer and good will, call Jack Bouganem (868-5888) to join in the program. Children are welcome!
* Visit a woman recuperating from a serious injury at a nearby rehabilitaion center - Call Bea Hoffman (868-8256) for more information.
* Sew cloth "surgi-dolls" for hospitalized children. We have the fabric and patterns and they're easy to sew. Doctors use the soft dolls as models for explaining surgical procedures to children awaiting surgery and the children keep the dolls for comfort. Ideal project for youngsters and
adults. Call Marlene Solomon for instructions and material (623-1180).

Plan to participate in a community-wide blood drive on Sunday December 17 - - give the most meaningful gift for the Chanukah season.
Bikur Cholim needs volunteers both as donors and also for coordinating the
planning of this important mitzvah project. Call Marilyn Grossman
(223-2949).
The group meets the first Wednesday evening of each month. The next meeting is Wednesday, October 4, at 8 p.m. at Ohav Sholom. E-mail bikurcholim@ohav.org or call Bea Hoffman (868-8256).

Two Weeks in Jewish History -
Jeff Maynard

18 Elul - Yahrzeit of Maharal - Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel of Prague, who died in 5369. We remember the Maharal (c. 1525-1609) who was chief Rabbi of Prague, talmudist, moralist and mathematician. (See p. 374, vol. X of Encyclopedia Judaica.) Maharal is an acronym for Moraynu HaRav (Judah) Loew (ben B'zalel) (Our teacher Judah Loew son of B'zalel). Rabbi Shaya Karlinkski (of Shappells) has written an excellent series of classes in clear English on the Maharal's commentary on Pirkei Avos which can be found at http://www.torah.org/learning/maharal/.

24 Elul - Yahrzeit of Rabbi Yehuda Leib Gordon, who died in 5652. We remember Yehuda Leib Gordon (1831-1892), Russian Jewish scholar, journalist, poet and spokesman of the Haskalah (enlightenment).

13 September 1892 - Railway from Jerusalem to Jaffa opened. At the time, Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the man instrumental in the modern revival of the Hebrew language, coined a new word – "rakevet" – for train.

15 September 1935 - Sixty-five years ago, the Nuremburg Racial Laws in Nazi Germany deprived German Jews of their rights of citizenship, giving them the status of "subjects" in Hitler's Reich. The laws also made it forbidden for Jews to marry or have sexual relations with Aryans or to employ young Aryan women as household help.

18 September 1860 - Simon Dubnow born in Byelorussia. The famous Jewish historian and ideologist. In 1922 he moved to Berlin. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Dubnow went to Riga, Latvia, where he remained at work until killed by the Nazis in December 1941. One of the great histories of the Jews of Eastern Europe is Simon Dubnow's History of the Jews in Poland and Russia, published in 1918. (If anyone would like to read it, I have a copy of the first edition).
